DVD Bang

Return from DVD Bang to Life in Korea

Return from DVD Bang to Homepage
DVD Bangs provide a great altenative to the movies:  Your own private viewing room!
A DVD Bang is a great alternative to a movie theater and provides privacy for those couples who want to get out of the conservative cultural spotlight where kissing in public is frowned upon.

The culture around DVD bangs is that they originally started showing up in the 1980's as private video rooms for couples to watch VHS movies together. The fad apparently started not so much for movie fanatics, but for the privacy aspect that the rooms provide. In Korea, it can be tough for young couples to find privacy, as Koreans live at home until marriage and there is a lot of cultural taboo surrounding public displays of affection.

At a DVD Bang you pay approximately 8,000 Won (about $8) to rent your own private room and which includes a movie for viewing.  You can choose your title
from among the hundreds of English and Korean titles which include many new releases and many Western titles

Rooms are very comfortable and ideal for private movie viewing - they include a sofa or low bed, air conditioner, amplified sound system and big screen projector.  Your own mini cinema.

This means you'll enjoy your movie in a comfortable, intimate and relaxing atmosphere.
